Online store from scratch or on a platform: which one fits you?

When people say they want to build an online store from scratch, they usually mean one of two things: a store written in custom code, or a store designed from a blank page on an existing platform. The difference matters, because it changes who maintains the store, how fast it launches and what you can change later.
What does "from scratch" really mean?
A store written in custom code has no platform underneath. Every page, the cart, the checkout and the dashboard are built for you, and nothing exists until someone writes it. A store designed from scratch on a platform such as Shopify, Salla or WooCommerce starts from a blank design, but the cart, payments, orders and product management already exist and are tested by many other stores.
What does a platform give you?
A platform gives you the hard, invisible parts on day one: product management, orders, payment connections, shipping options and a dashboard you can learn quickly. Your money and time go into the design, the product pages and the content instead of rebuilding a checkout. Hosted platforms also take care of servers and updates, while a self-hosted one like WooCommerce leaves those in your hands with more freedom in return.
What does custom code give you?
Custom code gives you a store shaped exactly around an unusual way of selling: complex pricing rules, products built by the customer step by step, links to an internal system, or a flow that no platform supports well. The cost is that everything a platform gives for free must be built, tested and maintained, and changes later usually need a developer.
Which path suits which store?
If you sell products in a familiar way, with categories, variants, a cart and shipping, a platform is almost always the better start. If your business depends on a buying process that platforms cannot handle without heavy workarounds, custom code may be worth it. A useful test: describe how a customer buys from you in a few sentences. If it sounds like any normal store, start on a platform.
Can you start on a platform and move later?
Yes, and many businesses should. Starting on a platform lets you learn what sells and what your customers ask for before you invest in something heavier. Products, customers and orders can usually be exported, though a move always needs planning, so choose a platform that fits your next few years, not only your first month.
How I handle it
I build stores on Shopify, Salla and WooCommerce, and in custom code when the selling process really needs it. Every store is designed in Figma first and built only after you approve the design. You add products and edit prices yourself from the dashboard, and support lasts 180 days from launch. Tell me how your customers buy from you and I will tell you which path I would take.
