Salla ready theme or a custom storefront design?

Every Salla store begins with the same choice: take a ready theme, or have the storefront designed. Salla store theme design is not all or nothing, and the right answer depends on what you sell more than on taste. Here is how I would think it through.
What do I get with a ready theme?
A storefront that works on the first day. Salla offers themes that you apply and then typically adjust from the admin: logo, colours, banners, the order of sections on the home page. For many new stores this is the right start. You can open, take orders and learn what your buyers respond to before spending on design.
Where does a ready theme fall short?
In looking like you. A theme used by many stores gives many stores the same skeleton, and buyers who shop often on stores built with the platform may recognise it. It may also arrange things in an order that suits a general store and not yours: sections you do not need, and no natural place for the thing that makes your product different.
What does a custom storefront mean on Salla?
It means the home page, category page and product page are drawn around your products and brand first, and the theme is then shaped to match that drawing. The store still runs on Salla, with the same admin and the same checkout. How far the shaping can go depends on the theme and on what your plan permits, so confirm it with Salla before design begins.
Which stores benefit most from custom design?
Stores where the brand is part of what is being sold: fashion, perfume, gifts, anything bought partly for how it feels. Stores with a product that needs explaining before the buyer understands its value. And stores that have grown and now compete with others using the same theme. A store selling familiar items on convenience gains less.
Can I start with a theme and redesign later?
Yes, and it is a reasonable path. Your products, orders and customers stay in the store while the storefront changes around them. What you should do from the start is keep your photos, names and categories tidy, because a redesign built on a neat catalogue is quicker than one that has to clean up first.
How I handle it
I design the storefront in Figma first, page by page, and you approve it before anything is built on Salla, so you can see how far it moves from a standard theme. After handover you change products, prices, images and text yourself from the dashboard. You then have 180 days of support, counted from the day the store goes live. Tell me what you sell and send me a link to your store if it is already open.
