How to ask for a quote and get a useful answer

How to ask for a quote and get a useful answer

Most disappointing quotes begin with a one-line request. "How much for a website?" can only be answered with another question or a guess. If you know how to request a web design quote properly, you get replies you can compare and act on.

Why do short requests get vague answers?

Because the designer has nothing to measure. A website can be a single page or a store with a large catalogue. Faced with no detail, a careful designer asks questions, which costs you days, and a careless one sends a package figure that fits nobody in particular. A few clear lines at the start save both of you that round.

What should the first message say?

Five things, in plain sentences. What your business does. What the site is for. Roughly which pages or functions you expect. What you already have, such as a logo, text, photos, a domain or an old site. And when you would like it live. It does not need to be formal or complete. It needs to be specific enough that someone can picture the job.

What is worth attaching?

Links, mostly. Your current site or social pages, a few sites you like with a word on why, and your logo if there is one. If you have a document describing the project, attach it, but keep the message itself readable without opening anything. Do not send passwords or account details at this stage. Nobody needs them to quote.

Should I say what I can spend?

You do not have to, but it helps more than people expect. A designer who knows your limit can tell you what fits inside it and what would have to wait, instead of proposing something you will reject. If you would sooner not name a figure, say which matters more to you: keeping the cost down, or getting everything in the first version.

What should I ask them to include?

Ask for the reply to cover the same points every time: what is included and what is not, how the design is approved, the platform and why, what you can edit yourself, the support period and what it covers, the payment stages and methods, and the expected schedule. Asking each designer for the same list makes the answers line up.

Is it fine to write to several designers?

Yes, and send them the same message. Different requests produce quotes that cannot be compared. Notice how each one responds as well as what they say: how quickly, whether they asked sensible questions, whether they answered what you asked. The way a quote is handled is a preview of the way the project will be.

How I handle it

Write to me by email or WhatsApp with whatever you have, even if it is only the five points above, and I reply within 24 hours. What I describe back rests on fixed terms: a Figma design you approve before the build, a dashboard you edit yourself, 180 days of support from the day the site goes live, and seven days at the start in which you can stop and get your payment back in full. Tell me about your project.
