Shopify theme or custom design?

Every Shopify store runs on a theme. The real question in Shopify theme vs custom design is who decided how that theme looks: its original author, or a designer working from your brand and your products.
What do you get from a ready theme?
A complete, working storefront on the first day. Themes are built by people who know the platform, they follow its rules and they are updated by their authors. For a new store testing whether a product sells, that is a sensible start. You choose a theme, set your colours and fonts, arrange the sections of the home page, and you can be selling while you learn what your buyers respond to.
Where does a ready theme start to pinch?
At the point where your content differs from the demo. The demo has tall, perfect photos and short English product names. Your photos are another shape, your names are longer, perhaps in Arabic, and the tidy grid starts to look uneven. The second pinch is sameness: the theme you liked was liked by many other stores. The third is the section you need and the theme does not have.
What does custom design mean on Shopify?
It means the pages are drawn for your brand first, and then built to match. Underneath, it is still Shopify: the same admin, the same checkout, the same way of adding products. What changes is the storefront the buyer sees. It can be built as a theme of its own, or as custom sections and styling on top of a solid existing theme. Which of the two fits depends on how far the design departs from what themes already do.
Is there a middle path?
Yes, and it is often the sensible one for a store that is not starting from zero. Keep a reliable theme as the base, and design the pages that carry the sale around your products: the home page, the collection page and the product page. The cart, the account pages and the checkout stay close to standard. You get a store that looks like yours without rebuilding parts nobody would notice.
How do you decide?
Ask where the store is in its life. If you are still finding out whether people want the product, a ready theme is enough, and spending on design is better kept for later. If the product is proven and the store now has to stand beside established brands, design starts to matter for trust. And ask how much the look counts in your field: in fashion, gifts and beauty it counts a great deal.
How I handle it
Whichever path you choose, I draw the pages in Figma first and you approve them before the build, so you never choose from a demo that was made for someone else. The store is handed over with the admin, and you edit text, images, products and prices yourself. During the first seven days of the project you can stop it and have the payment returned in full. Tell me about your store and where it stands today.
