What to prepare before you contact a web designer

The first conversation with a web designer goes much better when you arrive with a few things ready. None of them need to be polished. Here is what to prepare for a web designer so the reply you get is about your project and not a list of questions.

What is the site for?

One sentence is enough: what should a visitor do when they arrive? Call you, book, buy, read, sign up. Everything else in the project hangs on that sentence. If you have two goals, say which one comes first. A designer who knows the main action can tell you which pages you need and which ones you only think you need.

Do I need my text and images ready?

Not finished, but gathered. Collect what exists: your logo file, brand colours if you have them, photos of your work or products, a short description of each service, and anything already written about the business. Rough notes are fine. What slows a project is not imperfect content. It is content that nobody has started on.

Should I show examples of sites I like?

Yes, and say what you like in each one. A few links with a note beside each, such as "the way the services are laid out" or "the calm colours", tell a designer more than a page of adjectives. Sites you dislike are just as useful. You are not asking for a copy. You are showing your taste so the first design starts close to it.

What about the domain and hosting?

Write down what you already have: a domain name, a hosting account, an existing site, a store on a platform, business email. Note who holds the login for each, because it is often a former employee or an earlier supplier. You do not share passwords in the first message. You only need to know what exists and that you can reach it.

Who decides on my side?

Agree this before the project starts. If several people will comment on the design, name the one whose word is final, and collect the comments into one reply. Projects stall when feedback arrives from several directions and contradicts itself. Also think about your timing: is there a launch date tied to something real, or is it simply as soon as possible?

How I handle it

Send me what you have, in whatever state it is in, by email or WhatsApp, and I reply within 24 hours. From there I design the site in Figma, and you approve the design before the build starts, so missing pieces show up early while they are still easy to fill. After handover you hold the dashboard and can update the text and images yourself. Tell me about your project and what you already have ready.
