Building a news site on WordPress

Building a news site on WordPress

WordPress began as a publishing tool, and it still shows. A WordPress news website can run on what the system already offers, provided the structure is planned around how a newsroom really works.

Why does WordPress suit a news site?

Because the things a newsroom does every day are built in. Posts with a date and an author, categories and tags, scheduling an article for later, drafts waiting for review, and user roles that separate who writes from who publishes. You are not bending a tool meant for something else. The work is in arranging these parts well, not in inventing them.

How should sections and tags be planned?

Think of categories as the sections of a newspaper: few, stable and decided in advance, such as local, economy, sport and opinion. Tags are for the people, places and events that run through the news and change from week to week. When categories multiply without a plan, the menu grows, the section pages thin out, and editors stop agreeing on where a story belongs.

What does the home page need?

A clear order of importance. One lead story, a short list of the latest, then a block for each main section. All of it should fill itself from the posts, so that publishing an article is enough to place it. If an editor must rearrange the home page by hand for every story, the design is working against the newsroom. A slot for urgent news should be ready before it is needed.

What makes an article page readable?

Type first. Arabic body text needs a font drawn for long reading, generous line spacing and a column that is not too wide. Above the text: the headline, the date and time, and the name of the writer. Around it: a credited image, related stories, and sharing buttons that do not chase the reader down the page. Everything else on the page should be quieter than the article.

Who does what in the newsroom?

WordPress has roles for this. A contributor writes and submits. An author publishes their own pieces. An editor reviews and publishes the work of others. An administrator manages the site itself and should be the rarest role. Match these to your real team, give each person their own login, and agree on the path a story takes from draft to published.

What about traffic peaks and adverts?

News traffic is uneven. An ordinary day is calm, then one story brings a crowd at once, so the hosting and the caching have to be chosen for the peak. Images need to be resized on upload, because a news site adds many every day. If the site will carry adverts, their places belong in the design from the start, so they do not push the text around as they load.

How I handle it

A news site is one of the cases where I would build on WordPress without hesitation. The home page, the section page and the article page are designed in Figma first, and you approve them before the build with Elementor Pro begins. Your editors receive the dashboard and publish on their own from the first day. Support stays in place for 180 days after launch and covers anything that breaks as well as questions about using the site. Tell me about your publication and how many people write for it.
