Business website: a brochure site or an online store first?

When people ask how to design a business website, the first real question is what the site should do. Some businesses need a clear place that explains who they are and how to reach them, others need customers to buy directly on the site, and the two are built very differently.
What does each type actually do?
A brochure site presents the business: who you are, what you offer, why someone should trust you and how to contact you. The sale happens afterwards, on a call, in a message or in person. An online store lets the visitor choose a product, pay and wait for delivery without speaking to anyone. One is built to start a conversation, the other is built to finish a purchase.
When is a brochure site enough?
If what you sell depends on a quote, a visit, a consultation or a contract, a brochure site usually fits better. Contractors, consultants, clinics, agencies and most service companies sell this way. Here the site has to make the offer clear, show real work, answer the common questions and make contacting you easy from every page. Adding a cart to a business that sells by quote only adds steps nobody uses.
When do you need a real store?
If your products have fixed prices, can be shipped or delivered, and customers already ask how to order, a store makes sense. It also needs things a brochure site does not: product photos and descriptions for every item, payment and shipping set up, policy pages, and someone who handles orders every day. A store is a small operation of its own, not just a different design.
Can one site grow from the first into the second?
Often, yes. A WordPress site can start as a brochure site and later gain a store with WooCommerce, as long as the structure and hosting are planned with that in mind. On hosted platforms such as Salla or Shopify the store comes first, and the information pages are added inside it. Knowing which way you expect to grow helps choose the base from the start.
How do you decide calmly?
Look at how your last customers actually bought from you. If most of them asked questions first, start with a brochure site and a strong contact path. If most of them simply wanted to pay and receive the product, start with a store. If you are unsure, launch the simpler one, watch the questions people ask, and add the second when the demand is clear.
How I handle it
I start every project by asking how your customers buy today, then I suggest the type of site that matches it. Brochure sites start from $100; stores and larger company sites are priced after the brief. Every design is made in Figma and approved before the build, you edit the content yourself afterwards, and support lasts 180 days from launch. Tell me how you sell and I will tell you where I would start.
