Store app or mobile-friendly store: what decides the cost?

Many store owners ask about online store app cost because most of their customers shop on phones. Before comparing quotes, it helps to separate two things that are often mixed up: a store that works beautifully in the phone browser, and a separate app that people download from an app store.
What is the difference?
A mobile-friendly store is your website, designed so every page fits a phone screen and is easy to tap. Customers reach it from a link, a search or an advert, with nothing to install. An app is a separate product that customers download from the Apple and Google app stores. It lives on their home screen and can send them notifications, but they must choose to install it first.
What moves the cost of an app?
Whether it is built separately for each phone system or from one shared codebase, how many screens and features it has, and whether it connects to an existing store or needs its own system for products and orders. Then there is review and publishing in each app store, and updates every time the phone systems change. An app is not a one-time build; it is a second product to maintain.
What moves the cost of a mobile-friendly store?
The platform you choose, the number of pages and templates that need custom design, how many products and variants you have, and the integrations for payment and shipping. A store designed for phones from the first sketch costs less to keep right than one fixed afterwards, because every decision about menus, filters and buttons was made with a small screen in mind.
When does an app make sense?
When customers buy from you again and again, such as groceries, cosmetics or daily supplies, and you want a direct way to reach them. When you already have a loyal base that would install it. Or when you need a feature that only an app can offer. If most visitors arrive once from an advert, asking them to download something first usually adds a step they will not take.
What should come first?
For most new stores, the website comes first. It is what search engines show, what adverts link to and what customers share. Some store platforms also offer ways to turn the store into an app later, and these connect to the same products and orders. Getting the store right on phones gives any future app something solid to build on.
How I handle it
I design stores for phones from the first frame in Figma, and you approve the design before the build starts. I build on Salla, Shopify or WooCommerce, and you get the dashboard to manage products, prices and orders yourself. I do not build native apps, so if you need one I will tell you honestly what to ask its developer. Support lasts 180 days from launch. Stores are priced after the brief. Tell me about your shop and I reply within 24 hours.
